As we all know, the UK is set to leave the EU on 29th March 2019 or soon thereafter.  If no agreement or deal is secured with the EU before then, the UK will leave the European Union and subsequently trade under WTO rules. While there are frantic discussions ongoing to avoid this situation, the deadline however is now closing in, and to mitigate potential risk we need to plan for a no-deal scenario.

Transport Brexit

In order to assist with your own preparations for such a situation, there are some fairly straightforward steps to consider in order to minimise any resulting impact, so we suggest you consider the following 4 important guidelines :-

  1. EORI (Economic Operator Registration and Identification) number – by now most traders will have one, but if not, you will need to apply for one – you can do so via the following link. https://www.gov.uk/eori

    2. TSP (Transitional Simplified Procedures) – This is a new process which only importers can apply for, and we strenuously recommend that all importers apply without further delay, if not already done . Importers can obtain guidance and assistance on how to apply for TSP via the links below. Once you have done this you can import most goods into the UK without the need for full customs declarations at the port, and postpone paying your customs duties. This will potentially and significantly reduce disruption at the ports and the transit impact on your freight.

    3. Authority for a Customs Clearance Agent to act as a Direct Representative – Please complete the ACCA Form and return with your main contact at Currie Solutions.

    4. Supporting paperwork – Please be prepared to make sure that your shipments are supported by a commercial export/import invoice, which must include clear details of the shipment and particularly, an accurate value along with a full customs commodity code.

If you have not already done so, you can register to receive regular updates from the UK Government and we’d strongly advise you do so via the links below :-

Hopefully the above will offer some assistance and we’ll aim to keep you updated on any significant developments .

4 roller bed European spec tautliners added to our progressive modern fleet!

European taut liner

These are the first of two batches being added to Currie Solutions fleet.  A further 3 new air freight hydraroll mega curtainsiders will follow in March.

European Transport

These will operate between the UK, France and Holland to further support our experienced European Transport teams.

These were supplied by SDC and Asset Alliance Group.

Following on from our recent announcement last week we are delighted to share our first piece of exciting news!

With immediate effect we have acquired PS Ridgway of Dundee. The business will be merged with the Currie group and brings several key benefits to both businesses. Increased revenues, enhanced geographical footprint, traffic synergies and wider pallet network opportunities which in return will continue to improve the services we offer our customers.

It will take a little time to integrate the businesses as we focus on a ‘one team’ approach, but we look forward to working with our new team members.

Stephen Turner has completed the management buy-out of the Currie European Transport Group (recently rebranded Currie Solutions). Having been with the business most of his working life, Stephen has achieved the long term ambition of owning the company, originally founded by Norman Currie. “I am delighted, as someone who’s lived in Dumfriesshire man and boy, it’s been a huge part of my life working with Curries, and to finally be in the position to acquire the company is a real privilege. My vision is simply to ensure that we become the business of choice for our customers and staff to work with and in doing so we enable the growth of business in Scotland, the rest of the UK and Europe”.

The MBO was prompted by the business working through its plan for the years ahead “Tom Barrie (owner) and I, felt it was the right time for him and the right time myself to make this change, more importantly, we both believed it was important for the business. As Managing Director, I have been fortunate enough to lead the business since 2010 and I am now ready to take this great business on its next exciting journey.

Whilst the transport sector has been a difficult space for many to operate in over the last number of years, Stephen believes the sector is ready for change and evolution, with consolidation and collaboration for haulage businesses to get back into a profitable and more sustained business environment. “Like many, our results have not been easy on the eye in recent years. Most transport businesses have had challenges through increasing fixed costs and variable costs, without the margin increase in revenue to offset. Importantly though, we are not sitting around to wait on the next set of results, we have a strategy that is centred around the consolidation and collaboration that needs to take place in the market – and we will drive forward with that strategy”

And what of the future, “I won’t make any bold statements, instead, like we have always done, Curries will continue to make decisions that are best for the Group. With the support of our financing partners, we are now in a position to make more progressive decisions that support our vision. We see an opportunity to expand our footprint in Scotland pretty quickly and beyond that there are wider, longer term plans for us to work towards”.

Stephen also acknowledges the support he has had during the process from Robert Stewart of Generis Advisory and Murray Jack of Addleshaw Goddard. “Robert has been invaluable to me throughout the MBO process and his understanding of situations like this has been key in delivering our deal. Murray and his team at Addleshaw Goddard did a fantastic job, seamlessly taking care of all legal matters for us which included advising on the complexities of re-banking and buying our foreign subsidiaries”

When Brian Laudrup signed for Ranger in the 90’s he asked us to transport his car over from Denmark.   We happily provided the service on one of our Groupage trailers at the time.   The staff in the office were delighted to meet both him and Mark Hately who drove him down to collect the motor from our Dumfries office.
