By using a contract logistics solution you outsource the management and design aspect of activities such as supply chain planning, warehousing, stock control, freight transport including freight forwarding, pallet delivery, returns and return loads for efficiency, distribution, import and export.    We can even organise a courier service for smaller packages and orders.

By using a contract logistics solution you are a priority customer, planned into our regularly runs and you can also look at promoting your own business using your own livery on our trailers.

Stevie Stones has been with Currie Solutions for 40 years and today he made his last journey for us as he begins his retirement.

Stevie is the longest serving member of our team and has been an asset to the growth of Currie Solutions. He has worked within the office as European Transport manager and on the road across the UK and Europe as one of our long distance drivers.

He is well liked and appreciated by our customers and colleagues alike.

The Board of Directors thanked Stevie for his loyalty and work over the years. Allan Jamieson, Operations Director said:

“Stevie has been a valuable member of our team throughout the years. He has always been reliable, friendly and a team player who will be missed within the business”

On speaking to Stevie we asked what kept him in the job for so many years:

“European driving became my lifestyle as over the years I could be away for up to 3 weeks at a time across countries such as Russia, Scandinavia and the rest of Eastern Europe. I got to travel the length and breadth of Europe and I was always made welcome, met new friends and enjoyed the independence across there.”

After receiving his gifts from the company he expressed his gratitude

“I never expected to receive something as often people are forgotten in big companies such as this.”

Before leaving his truck for the last time, Stevie shared memories from the early days, the 24hr border crossings into Poland, his ice road trucker travels over the Alps in -40 degrees to the infamous Calais crossings and the day before digital.

Not many people know this but he once wrote a book of his travels for his children’s school, we hope that his retirement allows him to create a part 2!

We are supporting the local governments new initiative “Developing the Young Workforce” to strengthen the links between schools, colleges and employers. The aim is to encourage more work- based learning and career pathways for all young people with a vision of reducing unemployment in Scotland by 40% in 2021.

We already support our own Modern Apprentices in various areas of our business and this is the next step forward for us to develop the next generation.

We have been working closely with one of the local High Schools and the first 5 week work placement partnership began last week in our boardroom with a group introduction to the business and the industry, specifically looking at the recruitment process, quality management system, health and safety followed by a tour of the premises. The subsequent 4 weeks will look at the following:

  • Customer Service- Communication, operating Systems and KPI reporting
  • Finance- Sales Invoicing, credit control, sales ledger and purchase ledger
  • Business Systems- IT support and infrastructure, operational administration and cost control
  • Operations- route/vehicle planning, tracking systems, vehicle maintenance and tachographs
Inspiring the next generation
Steven Niven (HR Manager) explained: “We are delighted to be working together with our local community and opening our doors to the students. Our team are looking forward to working with everyone”

The Dumfries depot trailer park has now been sold to DGHP for housing but we retain ownership of the offices and warehouses on the opposite side of the road.

We have agreed a 2 year lease with DGHP allowing us to continue to use the trailer park as normal throughout the next two years which could yet be extended further. We are actively looking for a suitable new location close to the M74 but at this stage we have not secured a new site.

We also moved our Dumfries warehouse back to where we began in a WW11 hanger in Catherinefield industrial Estate. The warehouse team have been working hard and the warehouse is fully functioning as usual for all storage and distribution needs.

We now operate the Pall-Ex hub in Warrington, servicing the 19 Pall-Ex members across the North of England and Scotland. The well positioned site is five minutes from J20 of the M6, 12 minutes from the M62, and replaces Pall-Ex’s previous facility in Carlisle.

The modern hub offers 30,000 square feet of warehousing space, two acres of available parking for lorries, and is expected to see a 400 percent increase in pallets moving through the north. Pall-Ex managing director Kevin Buchanan said:

“This new northern hub will allow Pall-Ex to process a much larger volume of freight benefiting the entire network, as well as the north of the UK. Trunks from our northern depots will be processed through the Northern Hub, resulting in reduced travelling costs and improved operational efficiencies. It’s testament to the strong, growing and supportive freight network that Pall-Ex is.”

Pall-Ex is one of the UK’s leading pallet networks, with over 100 member depots and handles around 10,000 pallets per night. As full members, Currie can divert the distribution of quarter, half and full pallets through Pall-Ex’s palletised freight distribution network.

With modern hubs in Ellistown, Leicestershire and at Currie’s Warrington site, Pall-Ex is the only pallet network to boast ISO 14001 accreditation. Currie’s selective use of the network avoids running uneconomically, whilst maintaining the highest standards of customer service.

Stephen Turner, managing director of Currie, said:

“Taking responsibility of Pall-Ex’s northern hub will allow us greater capability to transport freight across the north of the UK, and will have a positive impact on a continued quality service throughout the country.”
